Birthdays
You are welcome to provide treats for all students if you choose to. Treats can be distributed at the end of the day (around 3:35) or at the lunch hour (approx 12:15) by you and/or your child. PLEASE NOTE THAT WE HAVE STUDENTS WITH NUT ALLERGIES, SO PLEASE DO NOT SEND FOOD WITH ANY NUTS OR NUT PRODUCTS.
Communication
We are delighted to meet with parents anytime there are concerns. You can catch Mrs. Higby before school and Mrs. Sagers after school. On Fridays we will switch off every other Friday or short day (whichever comes first). These days we would be available either in the morning or after. During the school day, our energies are focused on the students, so we prefer conferencing with you before or after school. You may also email at any time:

Discipline
A respectful learning environment is crucial. Schoolwide Expectations are:
- Be Responsible
- Be Respectful
- Be Safe
- Be Nice
Electronic devices
School rules prohibit all use of electronic communication devices during instructional time (including recess) regardless of whether the use is to send or receive messages. Teachers and other school officials are authorized to confiscate such devices from students violating this rule. Confiscated devices will be held in the school office and will only be released to the offending student's parent. Students can keep their cell phones in their bags on silent and use them after the school day is over. With novels on e-readers becoming more popular, e-readers are acceptable, but if used inappropriately they will be confiscated and will need to be picked up by a parent.
Field Trips
The parental donations to our class funds will be used for field trips and supplies. If you know of a field trip or guest speaker that is appropriate for our students, please let us know! We would like to go on a field trips that relate to the following subjects - Ancient civilizations, history, heat/light/sound, microorganisms/germs, space, and our changing planet. Parents are our best resources for great field trips.
Grading
The grading scale used by 6th grade teachers is based on percentages and weighted factors for typical A through N grades.
Grading Scale
Grading Scale
- A = 93
- A- = 90
- B+ = 87
- B = 84
- B- = 80
- C+ = 77
- C = 74
- C- = 70
- N = 1
- "check+" - means above average work
- "check" - means average work
- "check-" - means late, incomplete, or poor quality work
Late Work
We are working hard to encourage students to be responsible. It is important that they learn to turn in all work on time. Work turned in late can receive a maximum of 1/2 credit (50%) if the student stays in at recess and corrects it. Work will not be accepted after notification of "no more missing" unless there is a parent/student/teacher exception. Missing scores will be recorded as "M's". A's are for absent in gradebook, but will need to made up.
Library
Our library day is once a week. Please make sure your child brings his/her library books. If books are not turned in at the appropriate time they will begin to accrue fees. If these fees are not paid by the end of the year, students will not be able to attend beach day.
Mid Term Reports
Expect to see a computerized midterm progress report come home once each semester. The purpose of the midterm is to keep parents and students aware of schoolwork and progress. Please sign the note that comes home with the midterm report. Students receive extra credit in a subject of their choice with a signed note. This is however all accessible on Morningside's web page and gradebook (Link is in Progress Reporting/Gradebook)
P.E.
A district P.E specialist will teach one 45 minute class on Fridays. Please make sure your child is dressed appropriately for P.E. On weeks that we have Friday off, we will combine with another class.
Progress Reporting/Gradebook
To access student progress and grade reporting parents must create an account in Gradebook. You can access this HERE. Click on the Parents and Students TAB and then scroll down to Student Grade Progress. Grades are updated weekly. Parents and students are encouraged to check their grade progress regularly in order to make sure they are not missing any assignments. You should be able to see all assignments and scores. If you are unable to see this, please don't hesitate to contact us.
A guide to setting up a Gradebook accounts can be found HERE.

Safety Patrol
6th grade students have the opportunity to join safety patrol. These students need to be very responsible and trustworthy individuals. These students need to have good grades and will have earned to be on the patrol based on teacher recommendation. Students will receive an application at school and will need to fill it out with a parent signature. We will have monthly meetings with a treat (PTA funded) and 2 fun activities. Generally these activities are bowling at Olympus Hills (student funded) and Lagoon (student funded).
